Hi James, Thanks for weighing in. I agree with everything you say. Except for one:”broad generalization like this is dangerous”. I do make such a broad generalization precisely because QS is confusing and for people who want results, focusing on their CTR is the answer. I wish a few years ago when I was trying [...]

Hi Martin, Great comment. The reason I say “Quality Score equals CTR” is to make it simple for people who are interested in getting results and remove the cloud of confusion that surrounds every discussion on QS. We can talk about what Google does behind the hood to assign each keyword with a QS, and [...]

Chris commented on the blog post Bidding Into A Positive Spiral That Builds Long Time Savings 8 months, 3 weeks ago
Hi Chris, You bring up an old strategy that I think people should pay very close attention to because it works. Before anyone comes in to say that CTR is normalized by position and that the high CTR obtained from a higher position due to aggressive bidding has no effect on QS… they should try [...]

Rnasty (is that your real name?), I meant to reply earlier but got caught up with other responsibilities and completely forgot about my guest post. Forgive me. Hopefully by now you’ve already figured it out. If not, here’s the answer to your question… In your first spreadsheet, take a look at all the clicks you [...]

Hi Martin, Thank you for joining the conversation. I’m delighted to have a meaningful dialogue on the subject when time permits so please keep on sharing your thoughts. Reading your response, I realize that I might have sacrificed some important details in favor of brevity. What I’m suggesting in this post is not a theory. [...]

Under the assumption that Google’s normalization algorithm (CTR by position) is perfect – then yes, I absolutely agree Rnasty. But I’m quite skeptical about how well CTR for QS is normalized by position. (And I’m not the only one, read the last comments of Craig’s post: http://www.clickequations.com/blog/2011/05/getting-quality-score-right/). The…[Read more]

It would be interesting to know whether the low positions are causing the low CTRs or whether it’s the low CTRs that have earned you low avg. pos. Personally, average position is a metric I rarely look at – if ever – simply because it can be very misleading. I don’t know where you can [...]

Chris Thunder commented on the blog post Should Your Paid Search Account Care About Bounce Rates? 1 year ago
I remember the first time I found out about bounce rates and went to check it in my stats… it was around 90%. I was sad, I thought my visitors didn’t like me
Anyway, going further in usability testing and using tools like mouseflow.com or clicktale.com can provide good insights on high bounce rates.
