What motivates you? Hint: It’s actually not money

9:00 am in PPC Marketing Blog, Video by brad

Did you know:

  • The higher the monetary reward you give an employee, the generally worse their performance becomes?
    • That’s not true of manual tasks
    • It is very true of cognitive tasks

The three best motivating factors for individuals are:

  • Autonomy – are you in charge of your destiny?
  • Mastery – how can you get better at a skill?
  • Purpose – what does your work create

Did you notice that money is not listed?

I once left a job where if I would have stayed another 6 months, I would have received a nice bonus that could have easy been in the six figure range and at minimum it would have been middle five figures.

Why?

Money has never been one of my main motivating factors, and that’s not just lip service – I actually walked away from a nice bonus and comfy job. This decision baffled many of my co-workers, who think money is a motivating factor for everyone.

Why did I walk away?

I like to create. I follow my own rules (sometimes this causes conflicts when I work with someone). I have my own set of ethics and standards which are often higher than many businesses (not a reason I left the previously mentioned job; but I have left another one for that reason, and it was an ethical non-profit).

I’m not alone.

Nothing I’ve said makes me unique.

This is fairly common human behavior. Many people do not have the financial means to leave a job; hence why there is less workplace movement that people desire. However, the same motivating factors still apply.

Wikipedia and Linux were created by non-paid people (who had other jobs); and yet are two highly influential creations.

Digg and YouTube did not become large on their own; they became powerhouses based upon people spending their own time sharing content with the community. Those sharers are not paid individuals.

My degree is in Psychology, with an emphasis on personality theory. Understanding people’s motivations, decisions, and interactions fascinates me (and marketing gives me a great outlet to test theories).

I recently watched a video that expressed these concepts more eloquently that I could ever do in an article. This video is almost eleven minutes long. It’s worth your time.

In fact, if your a boss or have employees report to you – you should watch this.

The video starts off a little slow and basic; don’t let the opening minutes fool you into thinking you understand all of these concepts (and even if you do – this is a great refresher); if you stay and watch the entire video (and think about how to implement these ideas into your workplace) these eleven minutes might alter the way you motivate your employees.

New Videos for the week of 4/19/2010

7:36 am in PPC Marketing Blog, Video by brad

Here are the new videos for this week. None of the videos are must watch videos. If you are new to AdWords, the basic videos about the new ads are worth taking a peak at:

  • AdWords New Ad Models: Changing the way you think of search ads
  • AdWords Ad Extensions: Making a good thing even better
  • The AdWords New Ad Formats Initiative: Google’s Next Chapter in Search Advertising
  • However, if you want to watch some videos, now is the time to take a look at the At Google Talks videos. These are generally longer videos (40 minutes plus) but they are given by experts and authors in the field at Google’s campus and then recorded for public consumption and generally contain excellent content.

News Videos for the week of 4/5/10

7:09 am in PPC Marketing Blog, Video by brad

AdWords Mobile Interface: Google has rolled out a mobile UI for helping you manage accounts on your phone. The mobile UI works well in an iPhone, but many phones are not well supported (mine isn’t supported at all even though it’s a full screen touchscreen phone). You probably don’t want to do a lot of work in your account via a mobile device. However, if you are looking to do some quick edits, pausing/resuming, or check the status of ad groups and campaigns this is a useful interface.

Shelly has created a nice video that looks at the bidding options in AdWords. If you want to move beyond setting max CPC bids, she takes a quick look at the other options.

I’ve also made two videos showcasing what you’ll find inside the new Advanced Google AdWords Book. One is a long, almost 10 minute video, and one is a quick 30 second spot:

And Here’s the very short video:

Search Funnels, Retargeting, and other videos for the week of 3/29/10

6:39 am in PPC Marketing Blog, Video by brad

Google has launched some new features in the past month. The videos for those features lead off our featured video lsit.

This was introduced about two weeks ago. Search Funnels allow you to see data about the keywords in your account that lead up to the actual conversion. However, as this is AdWords only – no organic or other PPC engines – it’s a helpful look at attribution; but is by no means complete.

The other new major new feature in AdWords is Remarketing. Remarketing allows you to target customers who were on your site and then left. Remarketing works fantastic for many companies because there was already some interaction with your site.

Videos for the week of 3/6/2010

7:23 am in PPC Marketing Blog, Video by brad

There have been very little videos produced for advertisers in the past couple weeks. The lack of video can easily be attributed to a few conferences that have been going on.

I’m a big fan of mobile. I think mobile will continue to grow, and we are seeing countries where the internet is primarily accessed via a phone and computers are either not used, or a secondary device.

The first video is from Matt Cutts answering the question: Should you have a mobile version of your site.

The second video below is from Eric Schmidt, and others from the Android team, speaking at the world conference on mobile and it’s future.

Remember, on some CMSs, it is easy to create a mobile version of your site.

New Videos for the week of 2/22/10

12:26 pm in PPC Marketing Blog, Video by brad

Most of the new videos are fairly basic. If you are marketing to Canada, there are some decent videos from FastForward. In addition, as SES has a nice channel – I’m including all the new SES videos (as well as Pubcon). If there’s an SMX channel, please let me know and I’ll also add that one to the updates list.

The best marketing videos is one on analytics:

If you want to learn more about economics. Hal Varian (the chief economist for Google) did an interesting keynote at the American Economic Association titled:  Computer Mediated Transactions:

New Videos from Google for the week of 2/19/2010

1:57 pm in PPC Marketing Blog, Video by brad

Google has not created many new videos for AdWords in the past few weeks. However, they have launched a new social networking option in GMail called Buzz. Our featured video looks through Google Buzz.

Another video that is worth watching is about reaching Mom’s online: MomDotCom Webinar 2/9/2010

New Videos for the week of 1/25/2010

7:08 am in PPC Marketing Blog, Video by brad

The new video for this week our out and there are a few favorites we’re going to promote this week.

The first does not come from YouTube, but from Yahoo. See the major changes at Yahoo Search Marketing.

I don’t know  many people who have bought Google TV ads yet (if you have a story to share, just let me know). However, this video from Google TV Ads is not just about creating TV ads; it has some nice info about creating messages as well.

Over the past week, Google has made two major changes to Mobile ads. The first one is the ability for you to customize which carriers and operating systems will show your ads. The second one allows you to use clickable phone numbers in your mobile ads that are shown on ‘Phones with full HTML browsers’. You could already add a clickable phone number to a standard mobile ad. Here’s a video explaining how this works with your local business center account.

New Videos for the Week of 1/8/2010

8:55 am in PPC Marketing Blog, Video by brad

The year is still very light on videos.

Google did finally make a playlist of content network basics. These videos are not new, but as there’s very little new this week; and the content network is so important; its worth highlighting their videos again.

New Videos For the December 09 Holidays

10:58 am in PPC Marketing Blog, Video by brad

The holiday weeks have left us fairly light on videos the past two weeks. Since I missed the holiday video post, I’ve included both weeks together (which still makes this lighter than past weeks).

There aren’t any must see videos. If you’re into Analytics, than this Q&A video with Avanish & Nick will keep you entertained for 20 minutes.

Since we mostly talk marketing on this blog, we rarely examine some of the other videos that can be found. I’m a big fan of Google Tech Talks. Google has experts come into their offices several times a month to give presentations, answer Q&A, etc. All of these videos are recorded and stored on YouTube. The latest is about Personal Informational Management. This is approached from the tech provider standpoint about how different people organize info and how you can offer services.

As I’m an organizational junkie. I have meeting rules, Outlook rules, email rules, RSS rules, etc that would drive most people crazy; but they let me get a tremendous amount done; I like examining the different ways that people use technology to pick up tidbits here and there. It also helps with making system workflows when you want to organize your information to be part of someone’s daily life.
